Experimenting With Cut Paper
My past experience with collage usually consisted of using collaged paper in conjunction with another medium, like ink or linocut prints, but for my latest Fashion Illustration assignment, I was asked to work entirely in cut paper! This was a new experience and I really liked it. I felt like I instantly had a background by lying down the most amazing sheet of blue paper (it was likely so amazing because it was $5 a sheet, YIKES!) and then I cutout flowers from another piece of amazing paper (again, $5 a sheet). I had a blast buying up as many pieces of gorgeous paper from Primary Art Supply, but it was hard to cut them up because they are just so beautiful to look at. I wish you could feel the papers too, because they have such great textures and some even feel like fabric.
Anyway, I tried two different approaches to the figures. One (the more proportional gal) is more typically my style and the other (the more stylized/elongated girl) is more in line with what I see in the majority of fashion illustrations. I like the way they both turned out, but I still lean towards my typical style of figure over the elongated, super skinny and chic chica.
Which do you prefer?

Potential Mailer
The above image is something I have been working on for my personal professional mailers. I have had a hard time finding images in my portfolio that I think would make for great postcards. I actually sort of had a panic attack because of it and broke down and proclaimed that nothing in my portfolio was good enough. My Professional Practices professor assured me that some of my greeting cards would make for great mailer images (ie the bikinis and cupcakes) but if I wanted to work on something else I should give it a try, which is what I did. I still don't think this will work, but maybe I am being to finicky. We shall see!
My mailers need to be sent out by the beginning of March, so here's to hoping I've got it figured out by then!

Pick Up Charleston Magazine!

Snaps to Lis for getting published during her birthday month! Yay! What a nice gift!
The above image is in the latest issue of Charleston Magazine, which is a really great southern publication. This image accompanies an article written by an older gentleman who is lamenting about days past when country music was about love songs and poetry. He misses those days and wishes that country wasn't all about huge stage productions with fireworks, lights, and choreography. Hence, the vintage feel of the image.
I hope you all like it!
